WOMEN have a lot to offer the building and construction industry, yet their participation rates remain low, says the president of the National Association of Women in Construction (Vic & Tas), Laurice Temple.
In the next five years it is estimated 70,000 people will leave the industry, with only 45,000 coming in.
"Studies show that a diverse workforce is a more effective and efficient one. Many women tend to be able to multi-task, and so make great project managers. Women are [also] good at attention to detail, and tend to communicate in detail, which also makes for good engineers and project managers," Temple says. "By supporting females in the industry we are [helping to overcome] the skills shortage."
The building and construction industry includes architects, engineers, designers, interior designers, trades people and project managers. It's Australia's sixth largest employer, and in Victoria there are 180,000 full-time and 32,500 part-time workers. The industry is forecast to grow by 30 per cent over the next five years.
