Investment in Green Skills
On 30 April 2010, the Premier with Ministers Pike, Jennings, and Allan, launched the Jobs for the Future Economy (Victoria's Action Plan for Green Jobs) .
Jobs for the Future Economy (the Plan) is the Victorian Government’s $175 million action plan to create, support and sustain thousands of jobs now and into the future through new investment, new projects, new skills and new industries.
The Plan lists 18 priority actions through five key themes including developing green skills for trades and industry. By supporting green skills for trades and industry, the Government is investing $10 million including:
* $5 million to encourage Victoria’s 22,000 registered building practitioners to upgrade sustainability-related skills (Action 11); and
* $5 million to support the development and expansion of green training courses and assist young people into green training or jobs (Action 12).
The Plan provides that a Green Skills Taskforce will be established through the Victorian Skills Commission to provide strategic advice on Victoria's green skills and training needs. The Taskforce, informed by Victorian Industry Training Advisory Bodies through their 2010 Industry Skill Needs Reports, will audit green job and skills needs and advise on the capacity of the Victorian training sector to address these needs.
