So you want to be a plumber - and you're a girl?
BICCIAB are here to help! If you are a woman living in Victoria and you are interested in becoming a plumber we have a person who you can contact for advice.
Jane has contacts with training providers, employers and other women 'tradies' and can help you with advice about where to start.
Some women Jane has spoken to feel unsure about taking the first step and don't like the idea of just 'turning up' at a large TAFE and not knowing who to talk to - or even find the right person to talk to! We are here to help you find out about your career options and give you the low down on how best to get into this rewarding career path. There is no age limit and our advice is free.
Contact Jane at jane@bicciab.org.
FOR THE PLUMBING EMPLOYERS! If you are interested in taking on a female apprentice. Support will be provided during the transition from training to work and we will do the hard work in matching you with the right candidate. Contact Jane on jane@bicciab.org.
What we have done so far...
BICCIAB were involved in a project to support women complete a Certificate II in Plumbing (pre-vocational) course at the Holmesglen Chadstone campus. As part of the 14 week course, each participant was supported by a mentor and a woman who has completed a plumbing apprenticeship and is now working in industry. The course finished in October 2010.
Did you know?
- Qualified plumbers can earn over $1200 per week with the potential to earn more than this through overtime and self-employment opportunities.
- Apprentice plumbers working as part of the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (often plumbers who are working in the city) earn over $470 per week in their first year and over $1000 by their fourth year.
